A security concern struck Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata through an emailed bomb threat that the Cricket Association of Bengal received before the IPL match between KKR and CSK on Wednesday, May 7th, 2025.
The authorities’ immediate response allowed the game to continue as scheduled while experts put in place additional security measures to protect viewers who had filled the 42,373 seats.
According to CAB President Snehasish Ganguly, we received this bomb threat by mail. The staff at CAB received threatening correspondence in the afternoon, leading to an immediate notification of Kolkata Police. The stadium’s security force reacted swiftly to intensify safeguard measures.
The Kolkata Police responded with urgency, deploying :
- Plain-clothes officers throughout the venue
- Specialized bomb squad units
- Sniffer dogs to survey the entire premises
- Extensive checks of parking spaces and surrounding areas
“The mail was detected in the official email account of CAB. Investigation has been initiated and security has been tightened at the stadium,” Ganguly added in his statement.
Patriotic Gesture Before Match Commencement
During national unity demonstrations, which happened near recent military activities, both KKR and CSK teams joined forces with match officials to stand together by the boundary rope.
The pre-match ceremony featured :
- The Indian national anthem rendered at the stadium
- A special tribute to the Indian armed forces
- Recognition of “Operation Sindoor,” a retaliatory missile strike carried out earlier that day targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir
